How to Convert a Bitmap Image to Vector Graphic

A vector graphic is a kind of image object that is formed through a combination of dots and lines using a particular mathematical formula to enable a picture can be enlarged without reducing the view quality. It means, if you enlarge a vector image on your computer screen, the quality of the graphic remains the same as you see in the previous size.

You probably want to print your digital image artwork or any bitmap image in a considerable size of a banner. So, converting your bitmap image to vector graphic is the right idea because you can print a vector image in highest printer resolution. However, before you convert your bitmap image to vector, consider about the superfine of the picture, as if you convert a bitmap image to vector, it can not generate a superfine vector image object. But, you may choose a software program that has the primary function to convert a bitmap image to a vector graphic. I recommend you to choose CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator. Both CorelDraw and Adobe Illustrator can convert your bitmap image to a vector graphic.

To vectorize your bitmap image, you can use a graphic artwork software program either CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator. So, here’s the quick tutorial on how to convert an image to vector graphic using CorelDraw and Adobe Illustrator.

Convert an Image to Vector Using CorelDraw

Step 1 – Import the Image into Your CorelDraw Artwork

To open you import your image in CorelDraw, go to File, click Import, and there you are going to find the image location on your computer, and then click the Import button.

Step2 – Place the Image into the Blank Document in Your CorelDraw

In placing the image into the canvas work of your CorelDraw, just click once, but if you would like to set the picture with a certain large of view, hold your click while moving your mouse until you get a desired large of the image view.

Step 3 – Click Trace Bitmap

Then, this is the important part of changing an image to vector in CorelDraw. Make sure it remains in the selection phase and just click Trace Bitmap, and there you’ll find three trace options choose; Quick Trace, Centerline Trace, and Outline Trace. You can use any of them, but make sure you know what to do in the settings of Centerline and Outline Trace options. Then, do some settings to get the desired quality level of vector graphic. Step 4 – Export the Vector

Next, saving the vector graphic. If you want to edit the vector graphic later, you can export your vector graphic as CDR file format. Besides, CorelDraw also supports exporting your vector as EPS file format. To export your vector, go to File and click Export.

Convert an Image to Vector Using Adobe Illustrator

Step 1 – Open the Image in Your Illustrator

Go to File – Open – and choose your bitmap image (JPG or PNG) you want to convert to vector in Adobe Illustrator.

Step 2 – Select the Image

Select the entire part of your image by just clicking on the picture.

Step 3 – Trace the Image

Next, click the Image Trace button to change your image to a vector graphic. But if you want a quality vector, choose from the options by clicking the down arrow button at the right side of the Image Trace button. There you can use one of the Image Trace options.
